Casino Maritime Center

The Casino Building in Haifa’s Bat Galim neighborhood is an Iconic structure
with a unique architectural presence. Built during the British Mandate period, it
was a vibrant cultural venue featuring a performance bar and part of a complex
with the Israel’s first Olympic-sized saltwater pool. Designed by architect Alfred
Goldberger, the building’s foundations extend into the sea, giving it a ship-like
appearance, and its symmetrical facade acts as a gateway to the sea. Despite
its historical significance, the casino has faced decades of neglect. An adaptive
reuse strategy proposes transforming it into a research and treatment center for
the nearby underwater reef.
